Crochet Face Mask With Filter In Child & Adult Sizes

This crochet face mask with filter is made with cotton yarn, it’s lightweight and perfect for hot summer days.

Super quick and easy crochet face mask with an insert for paper filters you can make in under an hour.

It has a top and bottom inside flap so you can insert your paper filters (or similar filters). Make a few face masks and wash them after every use.

It is written in child and adult sizes and I will show you how to adjust the pattern to make it in any size you like.

I have been wearing face masks for years every time I traveled somewhere by plane because I always caught some sort of cold or flu when I didn’t. But now I just couldn’t find them anywhere to buy so I decided to make my own design and share it with anyone who might want to make one.

Please remember, a face mask will not protect you from viruses, staying home and washing your hands often does. This is just an extra layer of protection and it’s meant to keep your face away from your hands and keep your coughs and sneezes from landing on other people.⁣⁣

Learn The Basic Crochet Stitches

Crochet Level

EASY – This pattern is suitable for beginner crocheters who are familiar with reading a pattern and know the basic stitches. Check out my step-by-step video tutorial.

Supplies I used

1 x 50g balls of Anatolya Yarn 100% cotton yarn
crochet hook size 2.5mm
tapestry needle & scissors

I can’t remember where I bought this yarn from, but any cotton yarn will do. Here is a substitution for my UK readers and one for my USA, CANADA & INTERNATIONAL readers.

One 50g ball of cotton yarn was enough for me to make 2 adult-size face masks and 1 child-size face mask.

Size

Read below how to adjust the size of the face mask to suit your needs. Standard sizes are below.

Adult size – 23cm (9.1in) in lenght without ear loops and 12cm (4.75in) wide
Child size – 18cm (7.1in) in length without ear loops and 10cm (4in) wide.

Gauge

Gauge is not very important in this pattern, but for your reference, a 10cm by 10cm area crocheted with dc rows contains 8 rows by 19 stitches.

The Stitches

Pattern written in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

Most basic stitches below have a video that shows you how to crochet them. Follow the blue link next to them for each individual video.

ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
yo – yarn over
sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
dc blo – double crochet back loop only
dc flo – double crochet front loop only

Special Stitches

Double Crochet In The Back Loop Only (dc blo): This stitch is a variation of the traditional double crochet stitch. The main difference is that instead of inserting your hook underneath the entire stitch, the hook enters the center of the stitch, and exits underneath the back loop (the loop away from you).

Double Crochet In The Front Loop Only (dc blo): This stitch is a variation of the traditional double crochet stitch. The main difference is that instead of inserting your hook underneath the entire stitch, the hook enters the center of the stitch, and exits underneath the front loop (the loop closer to you).

Adult Size Mask – CROCHET PATTERN

The Face Mask

With 2.5mm hook and cotton yarn ch67

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, 43sc, ch1 and turn
NOTE: The remaining chain is the left ear loop and will be connected to the mask after completing it.

Row 2: 6sc blo, 3hdc blo, 26dc blo, 3hdc blo, 6sc blo, ch1, turn
NOTE: Crocheting in the back loop only (blo) will expose the front loops and we will later connect the bottom flap through those front loops to the mask.

Rows 3 – 13: 6sc, 3hdc, 26dc, 3hdc, 6sc, ch1, turn

Row 14: sc blo in each stitch until the end of the row, don’t fasten off
NOTE: Crocheting in the back loop only (blo) will expose the front loops and we will later connect the top flap through those front loops to the mask.

The Ear Loops

Right Ear Loop: Continue from row 14 and ch22, sl st on the opposite corner, fasten off.

Left Ear Loop: The portion of the starting chain that remained unworked forms the left ear loop. Use the yarn tail to sew it to the opposite corner.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

The Inside Folds

Bottom Fold: Locate the first front loop from the right on row 2 on the face mask. Join the yarn on that loop with a slip knot.

Ch3 (counts as a dc), take the loop off the hook, insert the hook in the first loop of row 4 (right on the edge), then back into the ch3 loop and pull through.
NOTE: this will connect the beginning of the inside fold to the mask and you won’t have to sew it at the end.

Continue and make 43dc flo (one dc in each front loop), again, take the loop off the hook, insert the hook in the last loop of row 4 (right on the edge), then back into the dc loop and pull through.
NOTE: this will connect the end of the inside fold to the mask and you won’t have to sew it at the end.

Top Fold: Place the mask with the inside part facing up and rotate it so the bottom is towards you (rotate it upside down).

Locate the first front loop from the right on row 14 on the face mask. Join the yarn on that loop with a slip knot.

Ch3 (counts as a dc), take the loop off the hook, insert the hook in the first loop of row 12 (right on the edge), then back into the ch3 loop and pull through.
NOTE: this will connect the beginning of the inside fold to the mask and you won’t have to sew it at the end.

Continue and make 43dc flo (one dc in each front loop), again, take the loop off the hook, insert the hook in the last loop of row 12 (right on the edge), then back into the dc loop and pull through.
NOTE: this will connect the end of the inside fold to the mask and you won’t have to sew it at the end.

Child Size Mask – CROCHET PATTERN

The Face Mask

With 2.5mm hook and cotton yarn ch53

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, 34sc, ch1 and turn
NOTE: The remaining chain is the left ear loop and will be connected to the mask after completing it.

Row 2: 5sc blo, 2hdc blo, 21dc blo, 2hdc blo, 5sc blo, ch1, turn
NOTE: Crocheting in the back loop only (blo) will expose the front loops and we will later connect the bottom flap through those front loops to the mask.

Rows 3 – 11: 5sc, 2hdc, 21dc, 2hdc, 5sc, ch1, turn

Row 12: sc blo in each stitch until the end of the row, don’t fasten off
NOTE: Crocheting in the back loop only (blo) will expose the front loops and we will later connect the top flap through those front loops to the mask.

The Ear Loops

Right Ear Loop: Continue from row 12 and ch17, sl st on the opposite corner, fasten off.

How To Adjust The Size Of Your Mask

Ear Loops: make as many chains as you need. If you have extra chains left from the starting chain, just unravel them.

Adult & Child Size Mask Length: Increase or decrease the number of double crochet stitches, both on the mask and the inside folds (don’t decrease or increase the number of sc or hdc stitches). Make a couple of rows and see how that fits your face.

Adult & Child Size Mask Width: Make fewer or extra repeat rows.
To be able to follow the pattern, you should increase or decrease the number of repeat rows by 2 otherwise, your last row will end up on the same side where the left loop is and you will have to construct the right loop separately.
