How To Join As You Go (JAYGO) Granny Hexagons
If you love the look of crocheted motifs but sewing them together is not your favorite part, the Join As You Go technique, also known as JAYGO, might be the right one for you.

Joining As You Go (JAYGO) is a method of joining a crocheted motif to the next one, as you work, by means of crochet, not by sewing them together.
It has many benefits over the sewing method:
- it’s faster
- it’s decorative
- less ends to weave in
There are different methods of joining as you go depending on the shape and pattern of the motif and also on the completion stage of the motif (finished or not).
If you are still interested in how to sew motifs together, see my tutorial on seamless joining here.
Today I will show you how to join granny hexagons and half granny hexagons with a simple method called The Slip Stitch Join As You Go (SL ST JAYGO).
This method is used on finished motifs and it gives a decorative braided look to the join.

Supplies I Used
- completed hexagons, see my tutorial on how to crochet the granny hexagons and how to crochet the half granny hexagons
- yarn for joining the hexagons
I’ve been working with Marriner Yarns lately and I love how soft it is and the colors are lovely. The DK yarn they have it’s affordable as well which is always a plus.
Unfortunately, this brand is only found in the UK, so for my international readers, I can recommend a similar yarn, Red Heart Yarns, which comes in a multitude of colors and weights, just as affordable and easy to work with as Marriner Yarns.

- crochet hook size matching your yarn, mine is a 3.5mm one
I use this set for all my crochet projects, there is a hook size for every yarn in this kit, they are metal and so the yarn slides easily with less friction and no splitting of the thread.
- darning needle to weave in the ends
I get most of my crochet supplies from Amazon, it’s fast and easy and I find everything I need in one place.
I also invested in Amazon Prime Membership which makes most of the shipping fees and deliveries super fast.
The Stitches
- slip stitch (sl st)
- chain (ch)
- single crochet (sc)
The Pattern
For your convenience, each step is written and demonstrated with detailed pictures after each step.
For joining hexagons, I usually start in the middle of the project and work my way to the edge of the project, but this is not necessary, you can start anywhere you wish.
I used my granny hexagon and horizontal granny hexagon made with 4 rows, but you can adapt the pattern to any size hexagon.
Preparing the First Hexagon
Make the joining round (first hexagon only).
In order to join the hexagons, you will need to crochet the joining round on your starting hexagon first.
Start with the right side facing you. This is the right side

And this is the wrong side

Sl st in one of the corner spaces, *ch 1(counts as sc), ch 2, sc in same corner space, ch2, sc in next space, ch2, sc in next space, ch2, sc in next space, ch2 (now you reached the next corner)* Repeat 5 more times to reach the first stitch (the ch1 that counts as sc), sl st in that stitch and fasten off.

Joining the Second Hexagon
One side is joining.
Join the 2nd hexagon to the 1st hexagon on one side only, then make the joining round on the other 5 sides.
Work on the right side of the hexagons. When handling the hexagons, place them with the wrong side facing each other.
Sl st in one of the corners of the 2nd hexagon, ch1 (counts as sc), ch 1, drop the loop off from the hook, insert the hook on the ch2 corner space of the 1st hexagon (from front to back) pick up the loop and pull it through the space, ch1, sc in the same corner space of the 2nd hexagon, ch1, *drop the loop, insert hook in the next ch2 space from 1st hexagon (from front to back), pick up the loop and pull it through that space, ch1, sc in the next space from the 2nd hexagon, ch1*.
Repeat section ** 2 more times until you reach the next corner on the 2nd hexagon.
Drop the loop, insert hook in the last ch2 space before the corner on the 1st hexagon, pick up loop and pull it through the space, ch1, sc in the corner of the 2nd hexagon, ch1, drop the loop, insert hook in the ch2 corner space of the 1st hexagon, ch1, sc in the same corner space of the 2nd hexagon, ch1.
From this point on, follow the pattern to crochet the joining round on the next 5 sides of the 2nd hexagon, once you reach the first chain (ch1 that counts as sc), sl st in it and fasten off.

Joining the Second Hexagon
Two side joining.
This step is similar to step 2, except this time you will be joining 2 sides of the 3rd hexagon (one side to the first hexagon, one side to the second hexagon).
Just as in the previous steps, work on the right side of the hexagon and when handling the hexagons, place them with the wrong side facing each other.
Place the 3rd hexagon between the 1st and 2nd.
The section below is identical to step 2 for joining one side of the 3rd hexagon to the 1st hexagon.
Sl st in one of the corners of the 3rd hexagon, ch1 (counts as sc), ch 1, drop the loop off from the hook, insert the hook on the ch2 corner space of the 1st hexagon (from front to back) pick up the loop and pull it through the space, ch1, sc in the same corner space of the 3rd hexagon, ch1, *drop the loop, insert hook in the next ch2 space from 1st hexagon (from front to back), pick up the loop and pull it through that space, ch1, sc in the next space from the 2nd hexagon, ch1*.
Repeat section ** 2 more times until you reach the next corner on the 3rd hexagon.
Drop the loop, insert hook in the last ch2 space before the corner on the 1st hexagon, pick up loop and pull it through the space, ch1, sc in the corner of the 3rd hexagon, ch1, drop the loop, insert hook in the ch2 corner space of the 1st hexagon (same space where the 2nd hexagon is joined in), ch1, sc in the same corner space of the 3rd hexagon, ch1.
From this point on, we’ll be joining the next side of the 3rd hexagon to the 2nd hexagon.
Continue from above, *drop the loop, insert hook (from front to back) in the first ch2 space after the corner of the 2nd hexagon, pick up loop and pull it through the space, ch1, sc in the next space (first one after the corner) of the 3rd hexagon, ch1*
Repeat section ** 2 more times until you reach the next corner of the 3rd hexagon.
Drop the loop, insert hook in the last ch2 space before the corner on the 2nd hexagon, pick up loop and pull it through the space, ch1, sc in the corner of the 3rd hexagon, ch1, drop the loop, insert hook in the ch2 corner space of the 2nd hexagon, ch1, sc in the same corner space of the 3rd hexagon, ch1.
From this point on, crochet the joining round on the next 4 sides of the 3rd hexagon, once you reach the first chain (ch1 that counts as sc), sl st in it and fasten off.
To make a three, four, and five side joining, follow the step 3 pattern.

Joining the Half Hexagon
Start on the flat side of the half hexagon and join the yarn with a slip stitch.
Ch1 (counts as sc), ch2 , *sc in the next space, ch2* repeat ** section until you reach the corner.
Sc on the corner chain, ch1, drop the loop, insert the hook on the corner space of the full hexagon from front to back, pick up the loop and pull it through the space, and ch1, sc in the first space between clusters of the half hexagon, ch1, drop the loop, insert the hook on the chain space of the full hexagon, pick up the loop and pull it through, ch1, continue around the half hexagon until you reach its last space between clusters.
Sc in that space, drop the loop, insert hook in the corner space of the full hexagon, pick up the loop and pull it through the space, ch1, sc in the corner chain of the half hexagon, ch2, sc in the next space (first space on the flat side right after the corner), ch2, continue until you reach the first chain, sl st and fasten off.

I have been looking for a printable that I can use to figure out placement of colors and the direction of joining as you go. I have made several hexagon blankets and I always have a hard time trying to figure this out. I would also like to be able to show how much work actually goes into making them.

Do you have a video for this? I watched the video for the bunny block where your showed how to prepare the first block. But I’m having a hard time understanding how you connect the second block. Your videos are fantastic!
