Red Poppy Flower Applique – A Free Crochet Pattern
Looking for a quick and easy pattern for a red poppy flower applique? Look no more!
This pattern works up fast and it’s crocheted in one piece without any sewing needed, perfect if you have to make lots of poppies in a short time.
In this post you will find 3 versions, with 3, 4 and 5 petals, to suit all tastes.
I made the 3 petal version for the Poppy Flower Baby Blanket, but while experimenting with patterns, I created the 4 and 5 petals versions and decided to share them here for anyone who needs a quick and easy crochet pattern for a red poppy flower applique.

About The Poppy Flower Applique Crochet Pattern
Below you will find the requirements for this pattern and the patterns for each of the three poppy flower applique versions.
Crochet Level
Beginner
The pattern is suitable for beginner crocheters who are familiar with reading a pattern and know the basic stitches.

Supplies I Used
- King Cole Pricewise DK in red & black
- crochet hook size 4mm
- tapestry needle & scissors
Size
Using the yarn weight and hook size suggested in this pattern will create a flower applique approximately 9cm in diameter.

The Stitches

- magic ring
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- yo – yarn over
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- inc – increase (2sc in same stitch)

Red Poppy Flower Applique – The Pattern
I split this pattern in three parts:
- 3 petal poppy crochet pattern
- 4 petal poppy crochet pattern
- 5 petal poppy crochet pattern
3 Petal Poppy Flower Applique

With black, create a magic ring.
Round 1: 6sc in the magic ring, don’t turn
Round 2: work in the round, inc in each 6 chains, sl st in the first stitch you made in this round
Change colors to red and start making the first petal
Row 3: ch3 (counts as a dc), dc in the same chain, 2dc in each of the next 3 chains, ch3 and turn
Row 4: 2dc in 5th chain from hook then 2dc in each of the next 5 chains, 1dc in the last chain, ch3 and turn
Row 5: sl st in 5th ch from hook, *ch3, sl st in following chain*, repeat till the end, sl st down the side of the petal (3 sl st) and in the ch next to the first petal
Repeat rows 3 to 5 two more times to create the other 2 petals, fasten off and weave in the ends.
4 Petal Poppy Flower Applique

With black, create a magic ring.
Round 1: 6sc in the magic ring, don’t turn
Round 2: work in the round, inc in each 6 chains, sl st in the first ch
Change colors to red and start making the first petal
Row 3: ch3 (counts as a dc), dc in the same chain, 2dc in each of the next 2 chains, ch3 and turn
Row 4: 2dc in 5th chain from hook then 2dc in each of the next 3 chains, 1dc in the last chain, ch3 and turn
Row 5: sl st in 5th ch from hook, *ch3, sl st in following chain*, repeat till the end, sl st down the side of the petal and in the ch next to the first petal
Repeat rows 3 to 5 three more times to create the other 3 petals, fasten off and weave in the ends.
5 Petal Poppy Flower Applique

With black, create a magic ring.
Round 1: 5sc in the magic ring, don’t turn
Round 2: work in the round, inc in each 5 chains, sl st in the first ch
Change colors to red and start making the first petal
Row 3: ch3 (counts as a dc), 2dc in the same chain, 3dc in next chain, ch3 and turn
Row 4: 2dc in 5th chain from hook then 2dc in each of the next 3 chains, 1dc in the last chain, ch3 and turn
Row 5: sl st in 5th ch from hook, *ch3, sl st in following chain*, repeat till the end, sl st down the side of the petal and in the ch next to the first petal
Repeat rows 3 to 5 four more times to create the other 4 petals, fasten off and weave in the ends.
