US To UK Crochet Stitch Conversion Chart
What’s The Difference Between British And American Crochet Terms?
With thousands of free patterns online, we’re only a click away from creating the crochet projects we want.
But sometimes, reading and following a pattern can be challenging.
Why? Because patterns could be written in 2 different sets of crochet terms.
While British crochet and American crochet share some slight term similarities, most of their stitch names hold different meanings.
For instance, both sets of crochet terminology have a stitch named double crochet (dc), BUT in US English terms, dc means single crochet (sc).
And that’s why it could be confusing.
Learning the difference between the two and how to convert one term to another is important to understanding patterns. And my US to UK Stitch Conversion Chart is here to help you with that.

How To Know If A Pattern Is Written In US Or UK Terms
Patterns that are written using UK terms don’t use single crochet (sc).
So if you come across a pattern that mentions sc, it’s likely written in American English terms.
Words such as “gauge” and “skip a stitch” are used in patterns written in American terms. “Tension” and “miss a stitch” on the other hand are used in UK terminology.
Most designers state explicitly if their patterns use US or UK terms, so don’t forget to check the pattern description.
Luckily, chart symbols are universal.
So if there’s a complimentary diagram, you can compare the symbols and stitch names to the above conversion chart.
