Crochet Popcorn Garland For Your Christmas Tree
Today I will show you how to crochet your own retro popcorn garland that you can use to decorate your Christmas tree, mantle piece, or staircase.
Growing up, we did not have much but we made the best of it. Our Christmas tree had candy instead of baubles and popcorn garlands instead of tinsel. Sometimes we would hang painted walnuts or paper decorations.
I used to wake up every morning and go straight to the tree to steal a piece of candy when my parents weren’t looking.
Then fold the shiny candy wrapper into shape and hang it back on the tree. By the time Christmas came, half the candy hanging in the tree were just empty wrappers. Good old times!
This year we moved into a new house so I decided to make my own crochet popcorn garland for our Christmas tree.
This pattern is quick and easy to make with minimum ends to weave in.
I used DK yarn ( light worsted, #3), but you can use any yarn weight you want. The thicker the yarn, the bigger the popcorn and the berries.

Retro Crochet Popcorn Garland
There are 2 different patterns used for this garland:
– the popcorn
– the berry
Make as many as you want, my garland had 30 popcorn pieces and 29 berries per meter of garland.
Crochet Popcorn Pattern
Step 1: ch6, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook
Step 2: Starting from the same ch where you sl st, *bo from 4 incomplete dc, sl st in the same chain* x 5
Step 3: Once you crocheted in the last chain, turn your work around and crochet on the opposite side of the chain. Starting from the same ch you made the last bobble stitch, *bo from 4 incomplete dc, sl st in the same chain* x 5.
Step 4: Fasten off and leave a small tail, about 5cm long. Use the tail and thread it in and out of the 5 chains (through the middle, the space between 2 opposite bobbles) all the way to the other end.
Step 5: Now pull the tail. This will curl your work and form the popcorn. Use both tails to make a double knot, then use the hook to pull the tails inside and hide them (you might want to cut any excess visible yarn).
Your popcorn is complete
Crochet Red Berry
Step 1: With red yarn and a 4mm hook, make a slip knot and ch1
Step 2: In that ch1, make 1bo out of 6 incomplete dc, sl st in the same ch.
Step 3: Fasten off and leave a small tail, about 3cm long. Use the 2 tail ends to make a double knot then use the hook to hide the ends inside the berry (you might want to cut any excess yarn).
Your berry is complete.
Now use the sewing needle and floss to thread the popcorns and berries, alternating them.
My garland had popcorn followed by a berry, but you can do a popcorn and 2 berries if you like.
