Crochet Hat Sizing Chart Preemie To Toddler
What Size Should A Crochet Baby Hat Be?
Let’s talk about Baby Hat Sizing and how to use a Baby Hat Sizing Chart.
The size of a crochet baby hat significantly depends on the baby’s head size.
And because every baby is different from another, the best thing to do is to take proper measurements to make a well-fitted hat for your little one.
You can easily do so by measuring your baby’s head using a tape measure and getting the head circumference.
But what if the recipient is unavailable and you can’t take the needed measurements? That’s when a Crochet Hat Sizing Chart comes in handy.
As long as you know the age group to which the baby belongs, you can use the table below to quickly determine the hat size you should make. Read on to know more.
How Do You Size A Baby Crochet Hat?
There are particular dimensions you need to crochet a hat properly:
- hat circumference
- crown width
- hat height
Knowing each one and getting every measurement right will help you avoid having an ill-fitting finished project.
Hat Circumference
This measurement is typically smaller (1-2 inches less) than the head circumference.
Crown Width
This measurement is how wide the crown, the very top, of the hat should be.
Also known as the crown diameter, you can get this dimension by dividing the hat circumference by 3.14.
Hat Height
This measurement is how long the hat should be — from the crown of the hat, down to its brim.
How To Use The Baby Hat Sizing Chart Below
The measurements given in the chart are relative and might vary from person to person.
To choose a hat size, measure the circumference of the head, compare it to the Circumference Column and see which pattern you should make from the table below.
Then start making a flat circle in the size mentioned in the table (Crown Width Column).
Once that is done, continue with plain rounds (without increasing) until you have the height mentioned in the Height Column.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baby Crochet Hat Sizing
How Do You Measure A Child’s Head For A Crochet Hat?
You can do this by directly measuring the head circumference of the child/baby.
Use a tape measure — if you don’t have one, a string or cord would do — and measure around the widest part of the head. It is the part above the recipient’s ears and eyebrows, where the hat typically rests.
Make sure the tape measure is snug, wrapped around the head firmly, but not too tightly. Take the measurement. If you’re using a string or cord, measure it against a ruler or a stick measure.
Since you already know the kid’s head circumference, you can now easily determine the hat circumference.
Usually, the hat circumference is smaller than the head circumference by 1-2 inches. So now, all you have to do is subtract an inch or two from the measurement you have.
Then compare the final number to the Hat Circumference Column of the chart above to know the dimensions you need for the other hat parts.
How Many Inches Are Newborn Hats?
Newborn crochet hats are usually 5-5.5 inches long and have a crown width of 4-4.5 inches.
The hat circumference differs for each baby, but newborns to 3-month-olds generally have a hat circumference of 13-14 inches.
How Wide Should A Toddler Hat Be?
Typically, toddlers have crochet hats with a crown width of 6 inches and a hat circumference of 18-19 inches.
What Size Hat Does A 6-Month Old Wear?
A 6-month-old baby often wears a crochet hat that’s sized about 15.5-16 inches (hat circumference).
What Size Hat Does A 1-Year-Old Wear?
1-year-old or 12-month-old babies wear a crochet hat with a circumference of 16-17 inches and a length of 6.25-6.5 inches.

I have trouble knowing what size of crochet hook to use for a kitty cat hat, for a little girl that will be 1 year old, next month. I was using a J and the hat was way too big, although I was following directions. Each place I check, the circumference should be 18 in. Even though I had stopped increasing, the hat was coming out at 21-22. HELP

Hi Betty, each head is different and sometimes a pattern might have to be adjusted. There are a few ways to go about it: use one size smaller hook that is recommended for the yarn you’re using or make less increase rounds(dtop when the circumference is the size you want). Hope this helps
