Reversible Cat Mood Toy Free Crochet Pattern & Video
Crochet Amigurumi Reversible Cat
Are you or your little one a cat lover? Then you will love this free crochet pattern: Reversible Cat Mood Toy.
You might wonder: What is a Reversible Mood Toy? The Reversible Cat is a double-faced toy designed to help work out emotions with young children. It has a face that expresses joy on one side and one that shows sadness on the other side, and it’s a way for your little one to express his or her emotions.
I have designed this Reversible Mood Cat to be crocheted in one piece, with minimum sewing involved. You will only need to sew on the ears and the mouth.
The pattern works up fast and with minimum ends to weave in. I used plastic doll eyes, but feel free to embroider yours if you wish.
I used Aran (worsted #4) for my design, but you can use a thinner yarn, DK (light worsted #3), or go thicker and use Bulky Yarn (chunky #5). It all depends on how big you want your kitty toy to be.

- Work in the round, without turning or closing the rounds.
- Use a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to mark the beginning of each round.
- The number at the end of each round is the stitch count.
- The pattern written between ** is that pattern that needs to be repeated.
The Body
Make 2 identical pieces, one in pink and one in blue. With a 5mm crochet hook, create a magic ring
Round 1: 6sc into the magic ring, pull the tail to close the magic ring hole = 6
Round 2: inc x 6 = 12
Round 3: *inc, sc* x 6 = 18
Round 4: *inc, sc in next 2sts* x 6 = 24
Round 5: *inc, sc in next 3sts* x 6 = 30
Round 6: *inc, sc in next 4sts* x 6 = 36
Round 7: *inc, sc in next 5sts* x 6 = 42
Rounds 8 – 14: sc in each stitch = 42
Insert the eyes between rounds 10 & 11 in the marked places, 8sts apart. Make sure they are on either side of the front legs, symmetrically placed.
Round 15: *dec, sc in next 5sts* x 6 = 36
Round 16: *dec, sc in next 7sts* x 4 = 32
Round 17: sc in next, ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4ch, sl st in the same st you made the last sc, *sc in next 8sts, ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4ch, sl st in the same st you made the last sc* x 3, sc in next 4sts, ch10, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 8ch, sl st in the same st, sc in next 2sts= 90
Round 18: *sk1, hdc in next 5chain loops on side of the leg, 3hdc in the top st of the leg(the chain you skipped on round 17), hdc in next 5sts you made on the other side of the leg, sk1, sc in next 5sts* x 3, sk1, hdc in next 5chain loops on side of the leg, 3hdc in the top st of the leg(the chain you skipped on round 17), hdc in next 5sts you made on the other side of the leg, sk1, sc in next 2sts, sc in next 9chain loops on side of the leg, 3sc in the top st of the leg(the chain you skipped on round 17), sc in next 9sts you made on the other side of the leg, sl st in the next st = 102
Fasten off and weave in all ends on the gray piece, and leave the yarn attached to the white piece, we are going to crochet the two pieces together.
Turn the gray piece with the wrong side on the outside and insert it inside the white one. Match the gray and white feet and tails and continue with the next round to join the two together.
Round 19: sl st through the back loop of the white stitches and front loops of the gray stitches to join the two pieces together. Make sure each gray stitch matches the white one (legs are aligned and corespondent stitches are one in front of the other). When you reach the tail, sl st through the exposed loops on the chains on one side and through the back and front loops on the other side = 112
Once you have sl st all stitches around, fasten off and weave in the ends.
The Ears
Make 4 identical pieces, 2 in gray and 2 in white. With a 5mm crochet hook, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 6sc in the magic ring, pull the magic ringtail to close it shut = 6
Round 2: sc in each stitch = 6
Round 3: inc in each stitch = 12
Round 4: sc in each stitch = 12
Round 5: *inc, sc* x 6 = 18
Round 6: *inc, 2sc* x 6 = 24
Round 7: sc in each stitch = 24
Round 8: *dec, 2sc* x 6 = 18
Round 9: fold the ear in half and sl st through both layers = 9
Assembling The Cat Toy
Sew the ears on each side of the head, above the eyes, making sure they are symmetrically placed.
With gray yarn (for the white piece) or white yarn (for the gray piece) and a tapestry needle, sew the sad mouth and 3 mustaches on the gray piece and the happy mouth and mustaches on the white piece. Follow the photos in this blog as a reference.
If you need more details on how to sew the mouth, check out my step-by-step tutorial on Crafting Happiness Youtube Channel.
