Granny squares are a great choice for making blankets because they use less yarn and work up very fast. Since this version has spaces between the stitches, the finished project is light and breathable.

You can join dozens of these motifs to create a large bedspread or a smaller lapghan.

The puff flower in the center adds a pop of color and texture that stands out against the classic lace-like background.

I’ve made granny square blankets in the past, and here they are if you are interested:

Many people like to join their granny squares together using a white or cream border to give them a clean, modern look.

These squares are so versatile, and you can make items like market bags or summer scarves.

You can connect a few of them to make a headband or a small pouch for your phone. Because they are so quick to finish, you can make several in one afternoon to give as gifts to your friends and family.

The gaps in the granny square pattern allow air to flow through, so your accessories won’t feel too heavy.

Puff flower granny square with a different number of rounds. From top to bottom: 3, 2, and 1 round.

The center of the square is a thick crochet puff flower that pops out from the background. These squares are great for using up small balls of yarn you have leftover from other projects.

Because each crochet puff flower granny square is small, you can finish one quickly and feel like you have done something productive.

If you are a beginner, this is a fun way to practice crocheting your granny squares. You can make the puff flower in a light color and the granny square with dark yarn to make the crochet puff flower stand out. I used pink on mine and dark green for the granny square.

With the color of your choice, create a magic ring.

Round 1: ch1, 12sc in the magic ring, pull the tail to close the magic ring, sl st to close the round = 6

Round 2: all stitches made in the back loop only, leaving the front loops exposed, **ch2, *yo, insert hook into the same st, yo, and pull up a loop* x 3, *yo, insert hook into the next st, yo and pull up a loop * x 3 (you now have 13 loops on your hook), yo and pull through all but last loop on your hook (you’ll have 2 loops on your hook), yo and pull through both loops, ch2, sl st into the next st** x 6 = 6 puff stitches (6 petals)

If you crochet over the yarn tail from the magic ring, you will have half the number of ends that you need to weave in at the end.

SWATCH 1 - How To Turn Puff Flowers Into Granny Squares - CraftingHappiness

Turn your flower with the bottom facing you. We will be working in the exposed front loops we created when we crocheted the puff flower. Join the green yarn with a slip knot in any back loop.

Round 1: ch2, (2dc,ch3,3dc) into the same loop where you joined, sk2 loops, *(3dc,ch3,3dc) into the next loop, sk2 loops* x 3, sl st at the top of ch2 you made at the beginning, turn = 8 clusters of (3dc)

From this point on, we will only crochet into the spaces between clusters or into the ch3 spaces.

Round 2: (ch3, 2dc) in the space between clusters, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in the ch3 space in the corner, *(3dc) in the space between clusters, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in the ch3 space in the corner* x 3, sl st to close the round = 12 clusters of (3dc)

From this point on, repeat Round 2 as many times as you like by making (3dc) clusters in the spaces between clusters below, and (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in the ch3 spaces in the corners.

I would personally do one more, or maybe 2 more rounds before closing and starting a new puff flower granny square.
