Sturdy Mesh Stitch Crochet Tutorial
I made this crochet sturdy mesh stitch because I wanted a pattern that looked open and airy but didn’t lose its shape when used for bags or clothing. The normal mesh stitch can sometimes stretch too much, so I worked on this version to give you more stability.

BEST FOR: Tops, sleeves, and market bags
PATTERN MULTIPLE: Multiples of 4 chains plus 3
ROW/ROUND REPEAT: 2-row repeat
COLOR CHANGE: Color change every 2 rows
PATTERN TYPE: Lace, Flat
YARN USAGE: Light (Airy/Open)

Choosing your colors and making swatches
When I made my swatches for this sturdy mesh stitch, I tested both solid colors and stripes.
You can see in my photos that a bright yellow looks very clean, while changing colors every 2 or 4 rows creates a lovely striped effect.
I recommend making a small square first to see how your yarn choice looks with these open spaces.

Why this is a great stitch for you
- It gives a beautiful, breezy open look
- It holds its shape and is much sturdier than a normal mesh
- It is very flexible
- It is simple enough for beginners and a great addition for experts

Is the sturdy mesh stitch great for beginners or experts?
- Beginners: You only need to know very basic stitches like single crochet, double crochet, and chains.
- Experts: This is a helpful basic pattern to keep in your library for when you need a reliable mesh.
- Bag makers: It is perfect for making market bags because it keeps its shape and will not stretch to the floor when you put groceries inside.
- Garment makers: It works very well for making tops and sleeves that need to stay right in place.

What can you make with the sturdy mesh stitch?
- Tops and Apparel: The structured nature of the stitch is ideal for designing tops. It is particularly effective for sleeves, as the stitch holds its placement and shape well.
- Market Bags: Because the mesh is sturdy and resistant to stretching or sagging, it is a reliable choice for reusable shopping bags that maintain their integrity even when full.
- Summer Accessories: This open-work pattern works beautifully for lightweight summer scarves or airy beach cover-ups.
- Lightweight Shrugs: It is a great option for a basic shrug to provide light coverage on sunny days without adding excessive heat.
- Travel Projects: Items made with this stitch are often compact and portable, making them convenient choices for crafting while on the go.

The yarn and hook I used for this tutorial
For this tutorial, I used Aran weight yarn and a 5mm hook. However, you don’t have to use the same weight as I did. You should use whatever yarn you like and the matching hook size that the yarn label suggests. If you want a more delicate look, try a thinner cotton yarn with a smaller hook.

I made a video tutorial to show you exactly where to place your hook for this sturdy mesh stitch. Sometimes seeing the movement of the yarn helps more than just reading the words. You can follow along with me as we work through the rows together.
