I recently used the classic mesh stitch to make a top for a holiday trip because I needed something breathable that could still keep me comfortable during chilly evenings.

It is a fast project that you can finish in just one weekend. This crochet tutorial will show you exactly how to create this beautiful, open fabric.
Project Overview
This crochet tutorial creates a lovely net-like fabric that has a fluid drape. It is a simple design that looks professional but takes very little effort to master.

BEST FOR: Summer tops, market bags, and breathable clothes
PATTERN MULTIPLE: 2 + 1 chains
ROW/ROUND REPEAT: One-row repeat
COLOR CHANGE: Every other row
PATTERN TYPE: Lace
YARN USAGE: Light (Airy/Open)

Playing with colors and swatches
Before you start your main project, I recommend making a small swatch. This helps you see how the classic mesh stitch looks with the yarn you chose.
You can try different colors like pink, purple, green, cream, red or a combination of any color that you want to see how they pop through the open spaces.
Since this is a lace-style pattern, even a solid color looks interesting because of the texture the holes create.

What is the mesh crochet stitch used for?
The classic mesh stitch creates a beautiful net fabric that is perfect for summer tops and market bags. Because it is so breathable, it is a top choice for warm-weather clothing. You can make a full top in just a single weekend, which makes it very satisfying to work on.
You can also use this simple net stitch to make lightweight clothes, reusable bags, and anything else that needs a nice fluid drape. It is very versatile and works for almost any item where you want a bit of airflow.

Materials I chose for this tutorial
For this crochet tutorial, I used Aran weight yarn and a 5mm hook. This combination makes the stitches easy to see and gives the fabric a good structure while staying soft. It is a comfortable size to hold and works up quickly.
You don’t have to use the same yarn I did. You can use whatever yarn you have in your stash. Just make sure to use the hook size that is recommended on the yarn label. If you use a thinner yarn, your mesh will look more delicate, and a thicker yarn will make it look bold.
