Tunisian Poppy Flower Applique Free Pattern

Poppy Flower Applique – Free Crochet Pattern
Today I’m sharing with you a new free pattern for a Poppy Flower Applique. I have created a poppy flower pattern before, but this time I am using Tunisian crochet stitches to make it and I think the end result is so much better.
The pattern is a mix of amigurumi and Tunisian crochet, but you will not need to know any Tunisian crochet techniques, I will guide you from start to finish and you will see how simple this pattern is.
You don’t even need to use any special hooks, a regular crochet hook will do, and if the written tutorial is not enough, I have made a video that shows you from start to finish how to make this beautiful poppy applique.
These poppies would look gorgeous attached to blankets, afghans, hats, and bags. Even on garments. I’m thinking of making myself a hat and adding the large version of the poppy to the size. Imagine how cute these would look on a baby hat!
My sample poppy flower applique came out quite large, 16cm in diameter, but only because I used DK yarn and a 4.5mm crochet hook so I can show you on camera where to insert your hook and what stitches to make.
When I used a 3mm crochet hook with DK yarn, my sample poppy flower came out 13cm in diameter. You can make it even smaller with a thinner yarn. I’m thinking of modifying this pattern to make a smaller poppy flower brooch for Remembrance day.
Read on to see how to crochet this beautiful poppy for yourself.

The Poppy Petals Pattern
Quick Notes
- Tunisian Top Stitch (tts) explanation – insert hook in the top bar of next st, yo, pull through, leave loop on hook.
- The pattern written between ** is that pattern that needs to be repeated
- the first tts stitch is the trickiest one, it’s the loop on top of the stitch located right below the loop on the hook (it’s like trying to crochet in the first chain from the hook), watch the video if you don’t know which one I mean
With pink yarn and a 4.5mm crochet hook, create a magic ring
Round 1: 6sc into the magic ring = 6
Round 2: inc x 6 = 12
Round 3: *inc, sc* x 6 = 18
Round 4: *inc, sc in next 2sts* x 6, sl st to close the round = 24
We are now going to start the poppy petal. The pattern below will create 1 petal.
Row 1: ch9
Row 2: insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and pull up a loop, leave loop on hook, *insert hook in the next ch, yo and pull up a loop, leave loop on hook*, repeat from * down the chain until you have 9 loops on hook, insert your hook in the stitch you sl st on round 4, yo and pull up another loop (10 loops on hook), *yo and pull through 2 loops on hook*, repeat from * 9 times until you have 1 loop left on your hook
Row 3: tts in each of the 8 top stitches (9 loops on hook), insert the hook in the same stitch you made row 2, yo and pull up a loop (10 loops on hook), *yo and pull through 2 loops on hook*, repeat from * 9 times until you have 1 loop left on your hook
Row 4: tts in next 5 top stitches (6 loops on hook), *yo and pull through 2 loops on hook*, repeat from * 5 times until you have 1 loop left on your hook
Row 5 & 6: Repeat row 3
Row 7: repeat row 4
Row 8 & 9: Repeat row 3
Row 10: repeat row 4
Row 11 & 12: Repeat row 3
Row 13: repeat row 4
Row 14 & 15: Repeat row 3
Row 16: repeat row 4
Row 17 & 18: Repeat row 3
Row 19: sl st 8 times on each top stitch down the row until you reach the bottom, sl st in the same stitch you finished rows 17 and 18
Now you have completed the first petal (which should be crocheted over 6 stitches on Round 4), sl st in the next 4 stitches of round 4, and start the second petal.
Repeat Rows 5 – 19 to complete the second petal. You should finish the petal with sl st in the 16th stitch of round 4.
Now we will create the border around the poppy petals. Sl st in the next 3 stitches of round 4, you should reach the beginning of the first petal you made.
Border: sc in each stitch up the petal (8sc), you will reach the top corner of the petal, make 3sc in that stitch, *3sc in next stitch* x 17 (you will reach the other top corner of the petal), sc in each stitch down the petal side (8sc) until you reach the bottom, sl st in each stitch (3 sl st in total) until you reach the next petal, sc in each stitch up the petal (8sc), you will reach the top corner of the petal, make 3sc in that stitch, *3sc in next stitch* x 17 (you will reach the other top corner of the petal), sc in each stitch down the petal side (8sc) until you reach the bottom, fasten off, weave in the ends.
You have now completed one-half of the poppy. Repeat the above pattern, from round 1, to make another identical piece.
Now let’s create the curly grey middle part of the poppy flower.
The Curly Middle Of The Poppy Flower Pattern
Work in the round, without turning. Use a piece of yarn or a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round. With grey yarn and a 4.5mm crochet hook, create a magic ring.
Round 1: 6sc into the magic ring = 6
Round 2 is crocheted in the front loops of the 6 stitches of round 1.
Round 2: *sl st flo in the next front loop, ch6, 2sc in the second ch from hook, and in each of the remaining 4 chains* x 6 = 6 curly cues
Round 3 is crocheted in the back loops of the 6 stitches of round 1.
Round 3: inc blo x 6 = 12
Round 4: *sl st in the next stitch, ch7, 2sc in the second ch from hook and in each of the remaining 5 chains* x 12, fasten off and weave in the ends = 12 curly cues
Putting The Poppy Flower Together
Place the 2 pieces together adjacent to each other and sew them together around the circle in the middle. Sew the grey curly middle to the middle of the poppy.
