What’s The Difference Between British And American Crochet Terms?

With thousands of free patterns online, we’re only a click away from creating the crochet projects we want.

But sometimes, reading and following a pattern can be challenging.

Why? Because patterns could be written in 2 different sets of crochet terms.

While British crochet and American crochet share some slight term similarities, most of their stitch names hold different meanings.

For instance, both sets of crochet terminology have a stitch named double crochet (dc), BUT in US English terms, dc means single crochet (sc).

And that’s why it could be confusing.

Learning the difference between the two and how to convert one term to another is important to understanding patterns. And my US to UK Stitch Conversion Chart is here to help you with that.

Which Stitch Names Are The Same In US And US Terms?

  • Chain (ch) – In both sets of crochet terms, chain stitch has the same name and meaning. Chain is a basic crochet stitch that’s integral to completing any project.
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – slip stitch has the same name and meaning in the US and UK terms. Slip stitch is a functional stitch that is used to join pieces together and finish projects with clean, basic edging.

How Do You Convert US Crochet To UK?

UK stitches are one step up from US stitches. For instance, a single crochet in the American crochet means a double crochet in the British crochet.

US double crochet (dc) is equal to UK treble (tr) — so on and so forth. To instantly convert crochet terms, use a chart like the one above.

How To Know If A Pattern Is Written In US Or UK Terms

Patterns that are written using UK terms don’t use single crochet (sc).

So if you come across a pattern that mentions sc, it’s likely written in American English terms.

Words such as “gauge” and “skip a stitch” are used in patterns written in American terms. “Tension” and “miss a stitch” on the other hand are used in UK terminology.

Most designers state explicitly if their patterns use US or UK terms, so don’t forget to check the pattern description.

Luckily, chart symbols are universal.

So if there’s a complimentary diagram, you can compare the symbols and stitch names to the above conversion chart.
