Crochet One Row Gingham Free Tutorial
Learn how to crochet the one-row gingham pattern with my free step-by-step tutorial.
The one-row gingham pattern is a modern and easy pattern to crochet with very few ends to weave in.
The one-row gingham pattern is beginner friendly and works up fast using only the double crochet stitch.
It’s crocheted by carrying all strands of yarn across and so there are very few ends to weave in.
The pattern is double-sided meaning it looks great on either side and so, can be used in a variety of projects, from afghans and baby blankets to shawls and jumpers.

How To Crochet The One Row Gingham Pattern

Supplies Used
- Marriner Yarns DK (light worsted) yarn in dark brown (chocolate, brown (mink), and cream (oat)

Abbreviations
Pattern written in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.
- double crochet (dc)
- ch – chain
- yo- yarn over
- dc1 – first double crochet in the row
Special Stitches
First Double Crochet In The Row (Dc1)
Sc in the first stitch, ch2.
Compared to the usual method of crocheting double crochet in the first stitch of a row (ch3), this method of constructing it will eliminate the gap that usually occurs between the first two stitches and will help bring the yarn that is not in use over to the following row.
One Row Gingham Pattern Instructions
The pattern is a repeat of two rows and requires multiples of 10 + 8 chains.
For this tutorial, my starting chain was 28 long.
With dark brown, ch28
Row 1: dc in 5th from hook, 3dc for a total of 5 double crochet stitches.
When you get to the 5th stitch, don’t finish it, instead join the brown and pull through to finish the stitch.
Continue with brown and make 5dc and while doing this, crochet over the dark brown yarn by laying it along the row of chains as you work to bring it along.
When you get to the last of the 5 double crochet stitches, don’t finish it, instead pull the dark brown yarn to straighten it and use it to finish that 5th stitch.
Continue with dark brown and make 5dc, carrying the brown yarn along.
Continue to alternate the colors every 5 stitches (and don’t forget to bring the yarn not in use along).
At the end of the row, right before you finish the last dc, change to brown and finish the double crochet stitch.
Turn
Row 2: Pull the dark brown yarn over the brown from right to left to catch it between the yarn on your finger and the loop on the hook and sc in the very first stitch, then ch2 (this counts as your first dc in the row).
Continue with brow and dc4, not forgetting to bring the dark brown yarn along. Don’t finish the last dc, instead, bring over the cream yarn and finish it in that color.
With cream, 5dc (don’t forget to carry over both the brown and the dark brown yarns), changing colors to brown on the last dc.
Alternate colors every 5 stitches, and carry the yarn not in use along, until the end of the row.
At the end of the row, don’t finish the last dc, instead, switch to dark brown and finish it in that color.
Turn
Row 3: Continue with the dark brown and dc1 not forgetting to carry the brow and cream yarn across to the next row.
Make 14dc, crocheting over the brown and cream yarn.
Change to brown on the last dc and make 5dc.
Continue changing colors every 5 stitches until the end of the row.
At the end of the row, right before you finish the last dc, change to brown and finish the double crochet stitch.
Turn.
From this point on, the pattern is a repeat of rows 2 and 3.
