Poppy Hair Tie Free Crochet Pattern

Poppy Flower Hair Tie For Your Little One
I have been making lots of poppy flowers in different versions lately, from poppy brooches and poppy pins, to appliques and baby blankets, but I realized I haven’t made a poppy flower design for kids that they can wear as hair accessories.
So here it is, the Poppy Hair Tie! Your little one can wear these cute flowers for Remembrance day and of course, you can use them as appliques for hats, hair bands and hair clips, the possibilities are endless.
I have used DK yarn and a 3mm crochet hook for these poppies and they measure about 9cm in diameter. If you change the hook size and yarn weight, you can modify the size to fit your project.
Read on to see how to crochet this beautiful poppy for yourself.

The Poppy Petals Pattern
Quick Notes
- this poppy pattern has 3 petals that are crocheted with the same pattern
- ch3 at the beginning of the rows or rounds count as a double crochet
The Black Middle Circle
With black yarn, make a magic ring
Round 1: 6sc into the magic ring, pull the tail of the magic ring to close it shut = 6
Round 2: inc x 6, sl st in the first stitch, fasten off and weave in the ends = 12
The Poppy Petals
With red yarn, join in any stitch on the black piece.
Row 1: ch3, dc in the same stitch, 2dc in each of the next 3sts, turn = 8
Row 2: ch3, 2dc in each next 6sts, dc in last stitch, turn = 14
Row 3: *ch3, sl st in the next stitch*, repeat ** until the end of the row, don’t turn, make 5 sl st down the side of the petal to bring the yarn back down to the black circle, your last sl st should be in the black stitch at the base = 52
You have now completed the first poppy petal. The next 2 petals are identical. To start your next petal, sl st in the next black stitch and repeat rows 1-3 to finish the petal.
The repeat the steps again to make the third poppy petal. At the end, sl st into the first petal base, fasten off and weave in the ends.
Assembling The Poppy Hair Tie
This step is simple, all you have to do is sew the poppy flower to the elastic hair tie with a few stitches in black yarn. If you want to make hair clips instead, use hot glue to attach the poppy flower to the metal clip.
