If you like texture but don’t want a complicated pattern, try the Textured Shells Pattern.
Crochet Textured Shells is a 4-row repeat pattern that uses basic stitches such as single crochet and double crochet to create a gorgeous bumpy soft fabric with offset shell-shaped clusters, perfect for blankets, afghans, and garments.
I have created a step-by-step photo tutorial and a video to show you how this gorgeous shells pattern is crocheted. Scroll down to find both.

Textured Shells Pattern Special Stitches
Crocheting In The Back Loop Only: A stitch has a front and back loop that meet at one end and look like a horizontal V (looks like this >).
Crocheting In The Back Loop Only: A stitch has a front and back loop that meet at one end and look like a horizontal V (looks like this >).
To crochet a stitch in the back loop only means you insert the hook under the stitch loop that is away from you and crochet your stitch as usual.
Shell Stitch: *Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop* x 5 (11 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 11 loops on the hook.
NOTE: you don’t close the shell with a chain as usual.
Half Shell: *Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop* x 3 (7 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.
NOTE: you don’t close the shell with a chain as usual.
Textured Shells Pattern Instructions
Notes:
- Ch1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch
- Stitches contained within ** are the repeat section for that row
- When you are instructed to crochet in chains, you are inserting the hook through the middle of the chain, not around it (you crochet in the chain, not in the chain space).
Starting Chain: This pattern requires you to chain multiples of 6+2. My starting chain is 32ch.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch, ch1, turn.
Row 2: sc, *ch2, shell, ch2, sc*, repeat from * until the end of the row, ch1, turn.
Row 3: sc *sc in next 2chs, sc blo in next stitch*, repeat from * until the end of the row, ch1, turn.
Row 4: half shell, ch2, sc, *ch2, shell, ch2, sc*, repeat from * until you have 3sts left, ch2, half shell, ch1, turn.
Row 5: sc blo in next stitch (not the ch you made at the end of row 4), *sc in next 2chs, sc blo in next st*, repeat from * until the end of the row, ch1, turn.
Row 6: sc, *ch2, shell, ch2, sc*, repeat from * until the end of the row, ch1, turn.
Repeat rows 3 – 6 until you have the required length.
