The Thermal Stitch (AKA The Double Thick Crochet Stitch) – Pattern Description
The cold season is here and today I am sharing the tutorial for a stitch that is perfect for this time of the year: The Thermal Stitch.
The Thermal Stitch is a one-row repeat crochet pattern constructed with single crochet stitches made in double rows to create a thick, warm fabric that is suitable for winter garments, handbags, potholders, and any other project that needs sturdy and thick texture.
It’s an easy stitch to master with just a one-row repeat, no-stitch counting, and just using single crochet stitches. Perfect for those evenings spent in front of the TV with your favorite TV show.

- Marriner Yarns Aran
- 5mm crochet hook
Multiple Color Use
- When using 2 or more colors, change colors after every row to avoid cutting the yarn
Abbreviations
Pattern written in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- ch(s) – chain(s)
- yo- yarn over
- sc – single crochet
- 3rd & blo – working in the 3rd and back loops of the stitch
Special Stitches
No special stitches were used in this pattern.
Pattern Instructions
- ch1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch
- TIP: The last stitch in every row can be tricky to find. To make sure you are not skipping it, place a stitch marker in the first stitch you make in the row and when you turn, you will know which one is the last stitch.
Starting Chain: This pattern doesn’t require any multiples, just make a chain the length you require. My starting chain is 26chs long.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of the remaining chs, ch1, turn.
Row 2: Turn your work to the side. Insert your hook through the back and 3 rd loops and make a single crochet. Repeat in every stitch until the end of the row, ch1, turn.
Row 3: Insert the hook through the back loop and the leftover parallel loop at the back (the front loop from the previous row) and make a single crochet. Repeat in every stitch until the end of the row, ch1, turn.
Repeat row 3 until you have the required length for your project.
Final Row: Insert your hook through the entire stitch AND the leftover parallel loop at the back (the front loop from the previous row) and make a single crochet. Repeat every stitch until the end of the row. Fasten off.
