The Shell Blanket Stitch – Pattern Description


This beautiful Shell Blanket Stitch looks more complicated than it actually is and today I will show you step-by-step how to crochet it.

The pattern is a 2-round repeat and after a few rounds, you don’t even have to count the stitches, is that easy.

No special stitches were used in this pattern.

Pattern Instructions


  • stitches contained within ** are the repeat section for that round
  • the number at the end of each round is the number of stitches not including the chains you made
  • ch1 at the beginning of the rounds do not count as a stitch

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch4 (counts as a dc + ch1), *dc, ch1* x 7, sl st at the top of ch3, pull the tail of magic ring to close it shut = 8

Round 2: ch1 (does not count as a st), *sc in next ch1 space, (7dc) in next ch1 space* x 4, sl st in the first stitch you made at the beginning = 32

Round 3: ch4 (counts as dc + 1ch), (dc, ch3, dc, ch1, dc) in the same stitch where you sl st, *ch5, (dc, ch1, dc, ch3, dc, ch1, dc) in the next sc stitch below* x 3, ch2, dc in the 3rd ch of ch4 you made at the beginning = 16

Round 4: *(7dc) in next ch1 space, sc in next ch3 space, (7dc) in next ch1 space, sc in the 4th dc of the 7dc shell below making sure you crochet over the ch5* x 4 = 64

Round 5: ch4 (counts as 1dc + 1ch), dc in the sc below, ch5, (dc, ch1, dc, ch3, dc, ch1, dc) in next sc, *ch5, (dc, ch1, dc) in next sc, ch5, (dc, ch1, dc, ch3, dc, ch1, dc) in next sc* x 3, ch2, dc in 3rd ch of ch4 you made at the beginning = 24

Round 6: *(7dc) in next ch1 space, sc in the 4th dc of the 7dc shell below making sure to crochet over the ch5, (7dc) in next ch1 space, sc in ch3 space, (7dc) in next ch1 space, sc in the 4th dc of the 7dc shell below making sure to crochet over the ch5 space* x 4 = 96

Round 7: ch4 (counts as 1dc + 1ch), dc in the sc below, ch5, (dc, ch1, dc) in next sc, ch5, (dc, ch1, dc, ch3, dc, ch1, dc) in next sc, *ch5, (dc, ch1, dc) in next sc, ch5, (dc, ch1, dc) in next sc, ch5, (dc, ch1, dc, ch3, dc, ch1, dc) in next sc* x 3, ch2, dc in the 3rd ch of ch4 you made at the beginning = 32

Round 8: *(7dc) in next ch1, sc in the 4th dc of the 7dc shell below making sure you crochet over the ch5, (7dc) in next ch1, sc in the 4th dc of the 7dc shell below (and over the ch5), (7dc) in next ch1, sc in next ch3, (7dc) in next ch1, sc in the 4th dc of the 7dc shell below (and over the ch5)* x 4 = 128

Repeat Rounds 7 and 8 until you have the desired size. On every other round, you will make 1 extra V stitch along the edges which you fill with 7dc shells on the next round.
